Business Strategy: Help Your Company Expand

by Eric Menzies

Both online and storefront businesses are only as good as the business strategy behind them. In creating a workable strategy of your own, one of the first things you'll want to know is how your business compares to other businesses in the same field. Owners with businesses in a niche field need to develop effective business goals while taking the potential market into account.

The factors in any business strategy are: What are the markets you will be dealing with; who your competitors are; what resources do you need to compete; any environmental factors involved; the expectations of those involved. You should try to break down these categories into ones you do and do not have power over. An example would be any companies that have a relocation option, or actively seeking new hires while others do not.

Determining what type of business model you require should also take into account what size of business you are running, and how best to market your company to both potential customers, but also to your own employees and investors. This plays a key role in small businesses who may initially try to expand beyond their capabilities, leaving them over extended and financially troubled.

Smaller companies have found business marketing significantly easier on the Internet, where "every company is the same size." A well planned, attractive web site that can be quickly reached through any search engine brings in business that would otherwise be too costly to reach through traditional media. Make it easy for customers to find you, and easy for them to buy your product, and your web site will bring in significant business for you.

While traditional advertising and marketing techniques can be costly, it may prove advantageous to continue to use newspaper and television ads to reach those people who do not have Internet access or who may have never heard of your company. In the end, utilizing various marketing strategies will often yield more success than relying on only one method of marketing.

Having a functional business strategy can help your business to grow. Planning ahead can significantly increase the business you can do with a minimum of effort while preventing you from driving your business into financial trouble. Knowing your resources, market, and an approximate plan of action should be a part of every company's business strategy and should help your business to succeed.
