Web Positioning: The Good And Bad

by Alex Perez-Prat

Although many people have heard of SEO or Search Engine Optimization, and some have actually paid for this service, few people have a clear understanding of how it works.Paying for SEO optimization will achieve higher positioning. However, higher positioning does not always lead to a rise in traffic and an increase in sales.

It helps to understand how search engines work to determine what sort of website promotion is really desirable and what is hype, or even worse. The nightmare of using SEO techniques is a webpage high on a list on a search engine, but so full of filler and fluff that few will stay to buy and few will return. You must also avoid fraud, which can get your website banned by search engines.

Everyone understands that web positioning does matter, because no traffic means no revenue is coming from a website. To have traffic, a target office has to find you in the first place and there are internal and external methods to be more easily found. Externally, SEO may arrange for sites to link to you, often reciprocally, and thus boost traffic, or web advertising can be purchased that will attach to pages with related content.

About 20% of search engine referrals come from an advertising method called PPC (pay per click). This method does play a significant part in Internet marketing, especially for seasonal products or when companies are having special events or promotions. They're nothing to worry about, though. There's a lot more to successful web positioning that just relying on PPC ads.

Web positioning is no longer a complicated, mysterious task. The secret to a high ranking, popular site is to use keyword rich content that search engine spiders will find and read easily, as well as an uncomplicated design that makes the site easy to browse. Since search engine spiders mirror the ease in which a human user can find information easily, your design can impact your ranking tremendously.

Web positioning is likewise affected by the popularity of a site. If a site is popular and well regarded, others will link and therefore increase the interconnections to it, resulting in a higher ranking. To be popular and well regarded, a site must contain content site visitors are interested in reading. Many pages may appear high on a search result list, but in actuality are full of obvious filler that is merely salted with valuable keywords to bolster the ranking.

Web positioning can be both good and bad, with "popularity" leading some to pack their content with keywords. But without popularity, even the best product or service will not sell well. The item or service has to be found for a user to buy it. Studies show that over 50% of searchers only look at the first page of results, and 20% never get past the second page. If your company is on page three or beyond, it's likely that no one sees it, no matter how good your product is.
