Residential Burglary Prevention Door Guards - Worry Free Living

by Rex Freiberger

Breaks-ins in houses can generally be avoided if the person that lives takes a few precautions to protect their house. The majority of break-ins occur when the lock is removed from the front entrance, so it makes sense that a good way to protect your house is to protect the door. Door protection will present a challenge to a burglar who wants to get in, either making them give up, or at least spend longer in the process, thus making him more likely to be spotted and recognizable to someone.

There are three main types of residential burglary prevention door guards that are available- door chains, door kick-in bars and Stainless Steel Screen Mesh Door Guards. By installing a door chain, you are able to allow the door to be opened partially to see who is at the door. This allows protection against unwanted callers who may try to enter your premises. A chain attached to the door hooks into a slot on the doorframe when the door is closed. The only way to release the chain is by closing the door and unhooking it.

Expect to pay between five to twenty dollars for door chain. The amount will depend on the quality of the chain. At the cheaper end of the market is a straight forward chain, easy to attach and use. Slightly more sophisticated is a chain that can be locked and unlocked from outside. Then there are more advanced door chains that can be used with a sliding bolt or have an alarm ready to go off if someone tries to force the door.

A residential burglary prevention door kick-in bar is a device created to stop a door from being opened by force. It consists of a heavy metal bar, that is horizontally attached across the door with a two-point locking system that locks the door on both sides. The kick-in bar will run you about $150.

The Stainless Steel Mesh Door is another useful security measure. It both shields the door and provides an additional barrier. You can also see and talk to someone outside the door through the mesh. And when you're not home, it's one more layer a burglar would have to work their way through. However, the price can range from $600 to $700, so this additional security is not without its price.

It's always better to be safe than to be sorry. Residential burglary prevention door guards not only helps one to avoid becoming the victim of a break-in, it also gives the owner of the house a peace of mind by guarding the home from unwelcome guests.
