Self Assurance Is An Attitude That Can Be Yours

by Alan B. Densky, CH

Self-confidence is defined as the power to have faith in oneself as well as one's skills. This attribute is crucial to an individual's successes throughout one's lifetime. This quality encourages people to know that they are worthwhile and that they are capable of succeeding in their actions. Even those who lack this characteristic can learn how to increase their self confidence.

Without this characteristic, the majority of individuals are powerless to realize life ambitions. They frequently are unsuccessful in relationships, academic endeavors, and work situations. They often develop a social phobia, and become ill at ease in group situations. People who lack self-confidence may hesitate to attempt to set or work toward goal accomplishment; they know that they will certainly fall short. They are convinced that they are inferior to or less successful than other individuals around them. They sometimes do fall short because of their lack of belief in themselves.

In contrast, the individual who can gain self confidence will find himself or herself strong enough to correct this painful trend and be able to find treatment for this social phobia. This person then learns that building self confidence yields remarkable improvements in relationships and academic achievements. Occasionally, a job promotion may occur because of steps toward boosting self-confidence.

People might not acquire self-confidence for a number of reasons. Some had overbearing parents, or been teased often in school. Some struggled educationally or socially. Others simply were not outgoing enough to make friends or know the reassuring encouragement of peers, parents, or teachers. Frequently, these persons fight against a self-perception of inadequacy and incompetence.

Too often, people who were not able to gain self confidence as children have difficulty building self confidence throughout adulthood. They have not learned how to accomplish this, and can learn only when they seek the aid and support of peers or professional counselors. Too many people are ashamed to admit that they are hindered by such difficulties, and simply continue to strive all their lives.

Several approaches can be utilized to assist persons to gain self confidence. Quite a few styles of counseling approaches, like cognitive therapy or group treatments, have been employed to teach people how to build self confidence. A wide variety of self-help guides have been written to coach clients to boost self-confidence. Therapists even provide seminars and retreats designed to help people gain self confidence.

Although all of these methods can be useful, two alternative therapies that are easily learned and incredibly helpful for most of persons who use them are confidence hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Professionals who practice confidence hypnotherapy are often capable of coaching people to develop self-confidence and drastically upgrade both their perspectives and their chances to achieve in life.

Traditional hypnotherapy (employing post-hypnotic suggestions) may be very effective. This approach is best with those who are suggestible and easily led. This technique often is not effective with persons who tend to be methodical or think critically.

For people described by this latter category, Ericksonian hypnosis or NLP approaches are much more successful. These strategies are great for successfully communicating with the subconscious, which is the seat of our thoughts and feelings. This happens because they bypass the resistance that analytical people have to the more traditional suggestion type of hypnosis.

One of the NLP techniques that people are frequently taught for building self confidence is called anchoring. Anchoring is a natural experience. For example, if you hear an old song, and experience sensations of deja vu, this is because your unconscious related the feelings in a past situation, with the lyrics of the song you were listening to during that time. So listening again to the music, the unconscious triggers the emotions related to it. For this reason the song is an anchor for those emotions.

With anchoring, people are regressed to an instance that allowed them to experience the feelings of confidence. When they remember and re-experience those sensations, they are taught to touch two fingers together. The unconscious then connects the sensations of confidence with the two fingers touching together. If the individual says that he or she has no memory of having self-confidence, the person may construct an imaginary event in which they do see themselves being confident, and then anchor those feelings of confidence.

Once they've anchored the emotions of confidence, in those situations that require self-confidence, touching the fingers together triggers emotions of confidence that can be used in the current situation.

Another very powerful NLP technique called the "Flash" can be used to instantaneously exchange painful feelings, which are frequently related to a lack of self-confidence. Because of this method, the mind diverts the mental pictures that cause negative emotions, to trigger mental pictures to generate a constructive response.

For example, the client directs the unconscious to use the visual images that are triggering emotions of insecurity, as triggers for visual images that will trigger feelings of self-confidence. Mental pictures trigger emotional reactions.

Everyone has dreams, and aspirations. A number of individuals are able to work toward these to achieve their aspirations. Others, however, permit their lack of self-confidence to overpower them. Although NLP might not work for everyone, the vast majority of persons who attempt this technique report significant success in increasing self confidence. This approach is actually better than other techniques for most people.

Summary: People who do not possess self-confidence usually find it difficult to succeed in the majority aspects of life. Several components cause individuals to acquire social phobias or feelings of incompetence. Many therapies have been developed to help people to build self-confidence. NLP has often been reported to be highly beneficial by the majority of individuals who have adopted this technique.
